Do you come from a sporting family?
Yes, they are fairly sporty. My Dad (Tim) participated in school cross country races when he was younger but never took it any future due to his fascination with cars and engines. My brother (Mark) used to participate in swimming, but shortly after his first competition he moved into the sport of BMX riding.
What are your plans after you finish school?
To stay in education for as long as I can, even though I would prefer being a full time athlete.
Who do you look up to in triathlon?
I look up to Javier Gomez because he is so committed and dedicated. Javier is the same height as me so he gives me inspiration! I also look up to Fabian Cancellara, he’s such a power house when it comes to time trailing, dominating the course. Watching him is like watching a waterfall…. It’s so peaceful and inspiring.
What is your best strength in triathlon?
I like to think I’m pretty even across all disciplines, but I enjoy cycling the most. I aim to be national level at all three disciplines. My secret weapon and most importantly my strength would be my transitions. According to everyone they’re the fastest in the world.
How did you get into triathlon?
I was a county swimmer & national finalist and started out doing some local aquathlons and becoming a biathlete. I achieved two British titles and also a European and World title. It was at this point that someone mentioned I should give triathlon a go. I did two weeks of work and was able to buy my first bike. I entered local triathlons but whilst I didn’t always win but I was always determined. I trained harder and came back a year later and was winning the local events.
In my first year of doing national level triathlons I realised I was doing pretty well. I was always in the top 10 and at the last race of the season, the IRC’S at Bryn Bach (2009) I finished 2nd - I can record that my dad actually cried, well small tears anyway!
What is your best achievement to date?
Coming 2nd At the European youth relays in Vila Nova de Gaia Portugal, 2010. Other squad members were Gordon Benson, Morgan Davies and team reserve Josh Harris.
What is your ultimate goal in triathlon and beyond?
To represent Great Britain at the Olympics games, worlds and Commonwealth games.
