Bio...
Katie Hewison (nee Ingram) was recruited to triathlon through the trigold talent identification scheme. She has been personally funded by Barrie Well to make the transition from elite runner to elite triathlete. She is now also supported as part of the UK Sport Lottery funded World Class Programme. She is based at the National Performance Centre in Loughborough and coached by Rick Valeti.
Katie was the 2009 Commonwealth mountain running champion, and is a former county level swimmer. Her transition to triathlon has seen her win silver at the ETU European Duathlon Championships and finish on the podium at ITU Triathlon European Cup races in Senec and Geneva.
Katie achieved a 6th place finish at the 2010 GE Edinburgh ITU Duathlon World Championships in September and combined with Cat Morrison and Sophie Coleman for overall team gold. She then won the senior title in Gijon in September 2011 in a close race with Germany's Jenny Schulz, who had taken the lead in a tight race, only to be overtaken in the last 50m by a fast-finishing Hewison.
“I have had a lot of new skills to learn, like how to ride properly and then race on a road bike, how to swim in open water and how to cope with the demands of a two hour event, which at times has been difficult. But overall I have adapted to the life of a triathlete far quicker than I ever anticipated.”
Katie is a former student at Loughborough University, having graduated with BA joint honors in English and Sports Science, so moving back to the area meant living somewhere familiar.
As well as being invited to join the trigold programme in 2009, Katie also won Deal or No Deal on TV. “I actually applied as a bit of a joke and didn’t really expect to get on, but I did and everything fell just right. I filmed the show two months before I had even heard about trigold.”
Major results:
- Gold: Gijon ITU Duathlon World Championships, September 2011
- Silver: Nancy ITU Duathlon World Championships, September 2012
